Lake San Domenico — A Moment of Stillness

Lake San Domenico — A Moment of Stillness

The photograph was taken during a photography trip Marie and I made to Italy with a small group of fellow photographers. As we were leaving the village of Scanno one morning, we stopped briefly at Lake San Domenico before continuing our journey.

What caught my attention immediately was the water.

The lake was completely calm, almost perfectly still, and the surrounding mountains were reflected so clearly that it felt as though the landscape had quietly doubled itself. The mountains existed once in stone and once again in the water.

Nothing seemed to move.

Standing there with the camera, I became aware of something I’ve experienced occasionally while photographing but rarely notice at the time. Each photograph required a small act of attention. Every time I pressed the shutter, I had to decide what part of that quiet scene I would include and what I would leave outside the frame.

For those moments, nothing else existed.

The world narrowed gently to the water, the reflections, and the edge of the composition. Each image became a brief pause — almost a moment of mindfulness — where the only thing that mattered was the balance between the scene and the photograph I was trying to make from it.

Places like this have a way of slowing everything down.

When I look at the photograph now, what returns most strongly is not just the image of the lake itself but the feeling of standing there. The calm surface of the water, the reflections that seemed almost too perfect to disturb, and the quiet sense of awe that sometimes arrives when a place asks nothing of you except that you notice it.

The lake did not demand attention. It simply held the landscape — and the moment — exactly as it was.

And for a short while, that was enough.
